How to Stay Visible as AI Overviews Change Search

Search results look different than they did a few years ago. For many questions, Google now shows an AI Overview: a generated summary at the top of the page, with links to the sources it drew on. Google has also introduced AI Mode, a more conversational way to search, and tools such as ChatGPT search and Perplexity answer questions directly.

If your business depends on organic search, the obvious questions are what this means for your traffic and what you should do about it. There is plenty of confident advice around, much of it guesswork. This article sticks to what Google has said publicly and to practices that make sense however AI search develops.

What AI Overviews are

AI Overviews grew out of Google’s Search Generative Experience experiment and launched broadly in the United States in May 2024, before expanding to many more countries and languages. They appear for some searches, not all, and Google decides when a summary is likely to help. Each overview includes links to pages that support what it says.

The practical effect is that the first thing a searcher sees may be an answer rather than a list of links. For a quick factual question, some people will get what they need without clicking. For searches that involve a decision, a purchase, a local service or detailed instructions, a summary is rarely the end of the journey: people still need to compare options, check details and contact a business.

What Google says about appearing in them

Google’s documentation for site owners is clear on a few points:

  • There are no special requirements. Google says no additional technical requirements or special optimizations are needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. The same SEO fundamentals apply.
  • Pages must be indexed and eligible for a snippet. To be shown as a supporting link, a page has to be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet in regular Search.
  • Existing controls still apply. nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex limit how your content can be shown in Search, including its AI features. Use them carefully, because restricting snippets also affects how your pages look in regular results.
  • Google-Extended doesn’t control AI Overviews. Blocking the Google-Extended token in robots.txt governs whether your content is used for Gemini models. It doesn’t affect whether your pages appear in Search or its AI features.
  • Search Console already counts this traffic. Clicks and impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in the Performance report under the Web search type. They aren’t reported separately.

In other words, there is no separate trick for AI Overviews. What helps is being a clear, trustworthy, well-organized source on the topics you want to be found for.

Practical ways to stay visible

Answer the main question early and plainly

If a page targets a question, answer it near the top in a sentence or two, then go into detail. Clear, self-contained answers are easy for readers to scan and easy for search systems to interpret. Use headings that match the questions people actually ask, and keep each section focused on one idea.

Add what a summary can’t

A generated overview is good at restating widely known information. It can’t replace first-hand experience. Pages that show real expertise are much harder to summarize away: your own process and examples, photos of real work, the specific factors that affect price, honest pros and cons, and answers to the follow-up questions your customers ask. Google’s guidance on helpful content points the same way, toward content written for people that shows experience and expertise and comes from a source that is clear about who is behind it.

Make pages easy to understand

  • Give each page one clear topic and a title that says what the page is about.
  • Break long content into sections with headings, and use lists and tables where they genuinely help.
  • Show who wrote the content and who stands behind it, with author details and clear business information.
  • Use structured data such as Organization, LocalBusiness, Product or Article where it fits, and keep it consistent with what is visible on the page.

Keep the technical foundations solid

Pages that can’t be crawled, indexed or rendered can’t be cited. Check in Search Console that your important pages are indexed, make sure key content doesn’t depend on a click or other interaction to load, link internally to your most important pages, and confirm the site works well on mobile. None of this is new, and that is the point: the fundamentals now matter in more places.

Build your brand beyond your own site

AI answers draw on what the wider web says about you, not only on what you say about yourself. Consistent business information, genuine reviews, mentions in relevant publications and directories, and an accurate Google Business Profile all help search systems connect your brand with the topics and places you serve. For businesses that rely on nearby customers, local SEO work on profiles, citations and reviews matters as much as ever.

Rebalance content toward searches where clicks still matter

Look at which pages are losing clicks. Pages that answer a quick factual question are the most likely to be summarized without a visit. Content tied to a decision, such as service pages, comparisons, pricing explanations, detailed guides, local pages and tools, usually needs a visit to be useful. That doesn’t mean abandoning informational articles, but each one should earn its place, ideally by leading readers toward something you offer.

Don’t forget other AI search tools

ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot rely on their own crawlers or search indexes. Check that your robots.txt doesn’t block the search crawlers you want to be found by. Some providers separate the crawlers used to train models from those used for search; OpenAI, for example, documents GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot separately. Because Copilot draws on Bing, it’s also worth verifying your site in Bing Webmaster Tools.

How to measure what’s happening

  • In Search Console, compare clicks and impressions for groups of pages and queries against the same period last year. Rising impressions with falling clicks on informational queries can be a sign that summaries are answering the question.
  • Watch branded searches. More people searching for your name suggests your visibility elsewhere is working.
  • Track leads and sales from organic search, not just visits. Fewer but better-qualified visits can be a fair trade.
  • Check your most important searches by hand from time to time, and note whether an overview appears and which sources it links to.
  • Treat third-party “AI visibility” scores with caution. They rely on samples of prompts, and answers can vary from one run to the next.

What to avoid

  • Mass-producing thin pages, with AI or any other method. Google’s spam policies treat generating many pages mainly to manipulate rankings as scaled content abuse, however the content is made.
  • Hidden text or instructions aimed at AI systems. What you show search engines should be what you show people.
  • Chasing shortcuts, such as special files or markup sold as a way into AI answers. Google’s guidance doesn’t call for any.
  • Restricting snippets without a clear reason. It can reduce your visibility in regular results as well.

AI Overviews will keep changing, and nobody outside Google can promise how a particular page will appear in them. The businesses best placed to stay visible are the ones that are genuinely useful, easy to understand and consistently represented across the web.
